How I changed careers to start doing what I love

Hello and welcome to my first ever blog post! I’d like to tell you about why I decided to become a holistic therapist.

Blogging is something I thought I’d never be able to do. I’d put myself into the mindset of thinking that I can’t write, and that I didn’t have anything interesting to say. But now I have decided that it is time to overcome that fear and self-doubt, and just go for it.

I’ve started this blog so that I can share my love of my profession and the things I do to nourish my mind, body and soul.

So why don’t I start with why I’m here and how I became interested in holistic therapies and wellness.

I qualified as a Beauty Therapist in 2018 at the age of 32. I’d had various jobs before, working in retail, education, and hospitality, but I never felt like I was following the right path for me. Before I qualified I was a cover teacher for the Creativity Department in a secondary school. Although I found working with children rewarding, I always felt like I was lacking the all important passion.

During this time I was struggling with some mental health issues. My doctor advised me that there must be something in my life that I needed to change. So with that I began exploring.

I went on a weekend away with my mum to Chester and we booked ourselves in for some spa treatments at the hotel. It was the description of the Indian Head Massage that jumped out at me:

"Good for stress, anxiety, migraines and sleep."

This was the one I needed! I don’t remember much about the treatment but I will never forget how I felt when I came out. It was like an intense feeling of gratitude. It amazed me how different I felt after one hour on a massage bed. I thought the therapist had some kind of magical powers!

When I got home, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much the massage had helped me, I started researching holistic therapists so I could give some other treatments a go. Over the next few months I tried reiki, aromatherapy, and reflexology. I also took up yoga and started looking more at my diet and what specific foods are good for boosting happiness. I was starting to feel that passion that I knew I had been missing. Is this where I was meant to be? It was that year that I took the leap to change careers and retrain as a Beauty and Massage therapist.

I’ve now been qualified for over 3 years. Last year I started working my dream job at a 5* Luxury Hotel and Spa. I have also recently launched my own business, Kokoro Holistic Therapies. There’s still so much I want to learn and experience in this amazing industry.

I now want to spread my love and passion for holistic treatments and living. It’s made such a positive difference to my life and I hope it can help you, just like it did me.
